This yellow jersey
emerged
in time for the 1992 European Championship Finals. The number 1 on the back was
black, outlined in yellow, with a black border. For the tournament in Sweden, EURO 92
SWEDEN was displayed in white underneath the emblem on the jersey. The number
1 also appeared on the chest in black, in the same outlined and bordered
style, whilst the name WOODS was displayed in plain black, without outlines on
the back of the jersey, above the number. A plain yellow number 1 was
also worn on the right thigh of the shorts, above the emblem.
When the new
white uniform came out in 1993, this uniform changed slightly to bring it
into line with the outfield kit, in that a white border was introduced around
the emblem on the jersey and the number 1 on the back changed to a new plain
black style, discarding the previous outline and border.
The goalkeeper’s
surname appeared in black above the number on the back of the jersey in the
1993 US Cup games against the USA and Brazil. On the shorts, the squad number
also appeared in yellow, alongside the emblem on the right thigh. Chris Woods
wore number 1, whilst Tim Flowers wore number 22. Against Brazil, Flowers
also wore black cycling shorts protruding from underneath his black England
shorts.
All of the shirts displayed on
this page were from the personal collection of Chris Woods and we are
extremely grateful to Simon Shakeshaft, curator at the National Football
Shirt Collection at the
England Match Shirts website for allowing us to display them here.
Now part of the Neville Evans Collection, this magnificent set of
photographs enables us to illustrate every single variation in the
history of this design. From left to right above, we have the original
style worn against the CIS in 1992; the back of the jersey worn at the
1992 European Championship in Sweden, when names appeared for the first
time; the jersey with the new larger emblem worn in 1993, and the back
of the 1993 jersey with the different style of numbering, without the
borders. There are more photos at the bottom of the page.
