Description
Yellow shirts with black zig-zag stripes from each shoulder down to the sides and down the sleeves. In between the middle zig-zag stripes is coloured orange. Shadow pattern includes wide diagonal stripes rising from right to left, including parts of repeating large concentric diamonds, with a three-dimensional effect. Printing underneath each diamond section alternates between two versions of 'ENGLAND', one appearing in reverse i.e. as viewed through a mirror. Black collar, edged with a thick yellow stripe and a thin black stripe. Black cuffs and diamond-shaped elbow padding, with three concentric shadow-diamonds within. Embroidered emblem on left breast. Two embroidered black concentric diamonds on right breast, with 'UMBRO' in capitalised black lettering underneath and a registered trademark placed above the gap between the 'R' and the 'O' in black. Black number one on reverse, with a yellow border, outlined in black. Black shorts, with white drawstring, with a black zig-zag stripe on left seam, surrounded by thick yellow zig-zags. Two embroidered white concentric diamonds on left thigh, with 'UMBRO' in capitalised white lettering underneath and a registered trademark placed above the gap between the 'R' and the 'O' in yellow. Embroidered emblem on right thigh. Black socks with sets of two yellow concentric diamonds repeating around each turnover, edged with two yellow hoops.
Variations
  • Nigel Martyn wore number 13 against CIS, David Seaman wore number 13 against Hungary and Tim Flowers wore number 22 against Brazil.

  • For the games played in the 1992 European Championship tournament, 'EURO 92 SWEDEN' was displayed in white directly underneath the emblem. The number was also worn in the middle of the chest in black, in the same font as on the reverse of the shirt, with a yellow border, outlined in black, and the player's surname was worn above the number on the reverse, in capitalised plain black lettering.

  • For the last eight matches in which this shirt was worn, the emblem was changed to accommodate a white margin around it.

  • The number on the reverse of the shirt changed to the font used on the outfield players' shirts for the last eight games in which this shirt was worn.

  • On the reverse of the shirt worn in the US Cup, the player's surname was printed above the number in capitalised plain black lettering in a different font to that worn in the previous year's European Championship.

  • A yellow number one in the same font as was to be used on England's 1993 white shirts, was worn on the right thigh of the shorts, above the emblem, for the two tournament fixtures in the 1992 European Championship.

  • In the two games played in the US Cup, on the right thigh of the shorts, to the left of the emblem, England wore yellow numbers in the same font as on the reverse of the shirt.

This yellow shirt emerged in time for the 1992 European Championship Finals, with Chris Woods still holding on to the number one shirt, but it was to be the last shirt that he wore for England.

David Seaman and Nigel Martyn were given opportunities to impress in early-1992, but Woods was back for the European Championship in Sweden, and for the entire 1992-93 season, but with England stuttering in their World Cup qualifying campaign, two humiliating defeats were to spell the end of Woods' international career; a World Cup defeat in Norway, and then losing to the USA in the US Cup.

Although Tim Flowers was added to the understudy list, and became the first England goalkeeper to wear black cycling shorts protruding from underneath his black England shorts, on his debut against Brazil, it was David Seaman, fresh from winning both domestic cup competitions with Arsenal (beating Chris Woods' Sheffield Wednesday in both finals) who got the nod for the best part of the next ten years (long after Graham Taylor's exit as manager). Woods, however, could hold his head up high, having only conceded 25 goals in his 43 England internationals (just over a goal for every two games).

All of the shirts displayed on this page were from the personal collection of Chris Woods and we are extremely grateful to Simon Shakeshaft, curator at the National Football Shirt Collection at the England Match Shirts website for allowing us to display them here. Now part of the Neville Evans Collection, this magnificent set of photographs enables us to illustrate a number of variations in the history of this design. From left to right above, we have the original style worn against the CIS in 1992; the reverse of the shirt worn against the CIS; the shirt with the new larger emblem worn in 1993, and the back of the 1993 shirt with the different style of numbering, without the borders. There are more photos at the bottom of the page.
