Club Career |
Club(s) |
Began his junior career playing for his father's team, Bellevue
FC. Signed by Southampton FC on associated schoolboy forms when he was
just fourteen years old, he had been suspended by his school. Then, after
turning down a professional contract, Wise trained with Queen's Park
Rangers FC, his favoured club, but they had no money to sign him, as the
south coast club still held his registration. Wise went on to train with
Crystal Palace FC as Lawrie McMenemy released Wise from his Southampton
contract. But it was Wimbledon FC that offered Wise his break in football,
signing him on 28 March 1985. Dave Bassett sent Wise and Sean Priddle out
on loan during the 1985 summer, to Grebberstad IF, of the Swedish third
divison. As a centre-forward, his five goals in ten league
appearances, saved the club from relegation. After falling out of
love with his club, and after 27 goals in 135 league appearances, Wise
signed for Chelsea FC on 3 July 1990 for record fee paid £1.6m. Eventually, Glenn Hoddle made him club captain. Wise was sold
to Leicester City FC on
25 June 2001 for £1.6m after Claudio Ranieri took over.
Wise had made 332 league appearances and scored 53 goals. He was
sacked by Leicester on 2 August 2002 for a serious breach of discipline,
he punched and broke the nose of Callum Davidson. Having scored
twice in seventeen Premier League appearances, Wise appealed, and
although he won his tribunal, a Leicester appeal was also successful, and
so without a club, Wise signed for Millwall FC on 24 September, and on 15
October 2003, appointed as player-manager. He appeared in 85
league matches, scoring seven goals, before he resigned on 8 May
2005. Wise returned to Southampton FC on 27 June 2005. He made
eleven Championship appearances, scoring once, until he left on 26
December 2005. He signed a six-month deal with Coventry City FC on 19
January 2006. Wise scored six goals in thirteen Championship
appearances, deciding to hang up his boots at the end of the
season, despite being offered a further years contract! |

Wise signed for Millwall FC on 24 September, and on 15 October
2003, appointed as player-manager. He appeared in 85 league
matches, scoring seven goals, before he resigned on 8 May 2005. He
became caretaker Dave Bassett's assistant at Southampton in December 2005,
but left after the vacant post was handed to Craig Burley on the 23rd. On
22 May 2006, Wise was appointed manager at Swindon Town FC. Despite a good
start, Wise and his management team joined Leeds United AFC on 24 October
2006, but were relegated to League One after his first season. Then, after
another good start to the season, Wise left Leeds for an Executive
Director role at Newcastle United FC from 29 January 2007, a position that
certainly made the first team manager Kevin Keegan uncomfortable. Wise
left Newcastle on 1 April 2009. |

the previous October. |
