This was the first orange shirt ever worn by England and it only appeared
three times
during a brief four-month period in 1997, when England faced teams wearing
blue shirts, as these clashed with the blue goalkeeper kits.
They were three very significant games, however, and England did not concede
a single goal when their custodian was wearing this top. The first two
games were in le Tournoi de France, when England convincingly beat an
Italian team that they were also chasing in their World Cup qualifying
group. A single-goal victory followed against the hosts, who would lift the
World Cup, just over twelve months later.
Then came the most memorable performance as
David Seaman crucially kept a clean sheet in Rome to secure England's passage to
the World Cup finals in 1998. The shirt in
the photos above was worn by David Seaman against France.
It appears here by kind permission of the Neville Evans National Football Shirt Collection (curator Simon Shakeshaft). |
