The colour of this kit was subject to much debate. From a
distance, it appears to be predominantly bronze, with a yellow chest, but very
close scrutiny reveals that it is, in fact, olive green, with a, sort of,
metallic glow to it. The chest (and underarms) is, indeed, yellow, but with
small black circles on it.
A matching pair of
olive shorts and white socks completes the ensemble, and, thankfully, this kit
signified the end of Umbro's dalliance with high fashion in the 1990s. The next
goalkeeper's outfit was back to
good old yellow.
The shirt in
the photos above,
modified to include the words FIFA
WORLD CUP FRANCE 1998 in white underneath the emblem,
was issued to David Seaman for the World Cup tournament, but it is not the one
worn in the classic encounter against Argentina.
It appears here by kind permission of the Neville Evans National Football Shirt Collection (curator Simon Shakeshaft).
