Variations |
- Against Romania,
MARTYN was
printed above the number on the reverse, in capitalised navy blue
lettering in the same font as the numbers.
- England had logos
sewn-on to the upper sleeves for the 2000 European Championship tournament
fixtures. The 'Euro 2000' tournament logo was on the right arm and the UEFA
Fair Play logo was on the left arm (see below).
- Nigel Martyn wore
number 13 against Romania.

Another goalkeeper's
shirt that caused
confusion when trying to determine its colour. This one appears turquoise under
lights, but in daylight, looks to be teal (a shade of green). Teal is a close
cousin of turquoise in the colour spectrum (or so I'm told). Let's go with
green.
It was only
worn when England wore their red away kit, but teal was not a particularly lucky
colour, with consecutive appearances seeing damaging results at the hands of
Romania and Germany. It did, at least, see victory in its last match as England
began to steady the ship again under
Sven-Göran Eriksson.
The shirt in the photos above
was worn by Nigel Martyn in the ill-fated clash with Romania in Charleroi, as
England were eliminated from the European Championship, after a last-minute
penalty winner.
It appears here by kind permission of the Neville Evans National Football Shirt Collection (curator Simon Shakeshaft).
