Notes
These
unofficial rankings are based on, in order, the stage of the competition
reached, points earned, goal difference and number of goals scored. Some
teams played one more match than other teams reaching the same stage of the
competition because playoff matches were used to break deadlocks in points
among teams tied for second in the group stage. Two such playoff matches
were played: West Germany 7 Turkey 2 and Switzerland 4 Italy 1.
Were the goals and points accumulated in these playoff matches disregarded,
West Germany's first-place position would remain unchanged, Switzerland would
drop to 7th with Brazil and England advancing to 5th and 6th, and Turkey and
Italy would advance to 9th and 10th with France dropping to 11th.
