Matches postponed due to more than one player on international duty:
 Aston Villa vs. Sheffield Wednesday
Villa were without Vic Crowe
Wednesday were without Tony Kay, Ron Springett & Peter Swan
Cardiff City vs. West Bromwich Albion
Cardiff were without Colin Baker, Alan Harrington & Dai Ward
West Brom were without Bobby Robson, Graham Williams & Stuart Williams
Cardiff's Ninian Park ground was also unavailable due to the international match

After winning seven games in succession, scoring 27 goals in the process, Burnley's gamble in playing their fixture at second-placed West Ham, rather than postponing it because of international call-ups, backfired. They were two goals down after six minutes, and their lead at the top was halved. A similar decision, a year earlier, had resulted in a big win for them.

Colchester had reacted to having to apply for re-election in the previous season, by winning their first seven home league games and storming to the top of the table, but they were now on a run of nine games in all competitions without a win. Form was restored, however, and they went on to secure their first ever promotion.
