Though missing Bobby Charlton, Manchester United used their game in hand to increase their lead at the top to three points. They looked strong enough to retain their title, but the pressure of also going for a long-awaited European Cup triumph took its toll and they relinquished the league to their near-neighbours, Manchester City. This was the last full set of league fixtures from all four divisions to be scheduled for the same weekend as an England match (apart from a one-off situation in 1972, due to a European Championship quarter-final). With league managers objecting to Sir Alf Ramsey naming an initial squad of 16, the following season's British Championship was moved to after the end of the league season.

Barrow's 700-mile round trip was rewarded with Torquay's first home defeat of the season. The Gulls would miss out on promotion and would never finish as high again, whilst Oxford, who would not win their first away game of the season for another three weeks, incredibly rose to win the title.
* Peterborough were destined to be demoted to the fourth division at the end of the season for offering illegal bonus payments to their players, but they were allowed to complete their fixtures.
