A controversial penalty decided this game in the seventy fifth minute and dealt a severe blow to England's hopes of qualifying for the World Cup finals. Kenny Sansom angrily protested his innocence after his tackle on Iordanescu had been ruled a foul. The Romanian picked himself up and scored the winning goal from the penalty spot. England had just been getting on top after Tony Woodcock scored in the sixty-sixth minute following a neat exchange of passes with Garry Birtles. Romania had their best moments in the first-half and scored at the peak of their pressure through Raducanu in the thirty-sixth minute.
