Club Career

Club(s) Started his career with local side Irchester FC before joining Wellingborough Town FC and then Northampton Town FC as an apprentice in July 1967, turning professional in December 1968. After 187 league appearances, and 28 goals, Liverpool FC signed Neal for £66,000 on 9 October 1974 where he remained, becoming one of the clubs leading right-backs during their most successful periods. He made 455 league appearances, and scored 41 goals. He joined Bolton Wanderers FC as player-manager in December 1985, making 64 league appearances, scoring three times, before retiring in 1989.

Management Career

Club(s) After retiring from playing, Neal remained with Bolton Wanderers FC until 8 May 1992. He then became Graham Taylor's assistant with England, until both resigned in November 1993. On 23 October 1993, Neal was appointed manager of Coventry City FC. He was sacked on 14 February 1995. After a year away from the game, he was appointed manager at Cardiff City FC in February 1996, but left to become Steve Coppell's assistant at Manchester City FC in October. However, by 8 November, Coppell had resigned and Neal took over as caretaker manager until 29 December 1996. He next became Barry Fry's assistant at Peterborough United in 1997, until his sacking on 15 March 1998.
