England virtually clinched a place in the European championship finals with this resounding win on a soaking-wet Windsor Park pitch. Both Trevor Francis and Tony Woodcock scored in each half, and the rout was completed in the seventieth minute when Chris Nicholl turned a Phil Neal centre into his own net. Northern Ireland's goal came midway through the second-half from a Moreland penalty. The Irish defence had no answer to the probing runs of Trevor Francis and Tony Woodcock, both of whom gave peak-power performances.
