    Match Report by Mike Payne

    Match Report by Norman Giller

John Barnes, making his debut as a substitute for Luther Blissett, threatened to end the deadlock in the final seconds but goalkeeper Pat Jennings managed to block his close-range shot. Robson also introduced Graham Roberts to international football and he almost turned the ball into his own net in the twenty-eighth minute, Peter Shilton saving the day by diving across goal to punch the ball against a post. Glenn Hoddle had his first full game for Robson after a succession of injuries. Jimmy McIlroy and Martin O'Neill bossed the midfield for long periods, and England were fortunate to escape with a draw.
