substitute notes: |
Ray Wilkins becomes the youngest of
England's 92 substitutes (he is two days younger than Kidd, May 1970).
He replaced Callaghan, he becomes the oldest England player to be
replaced, by three years. Mick Channon has been replaced a record-equalling
seven times, alongside Keith Newton. |
team notes: |
Ian Callaghan's third appearance comes eleven years and 49 days after
his second, in July 1966, creating a new record. |
records: |
Of the five managers to have sat at Wembley, only Mercer, Revie, and
now Greenwood, kept a clean sheet in their first match. |

Match Report
by Norman Giller |
Ron Greenwood, appointed first of
all in a caretaker capacity, called up seven of the players who had helped
Liverpool win the European Cup. His first England selection included
veteran Ian Callaghan, who was winning his first cap since the third match
of the 1966 World Cup finals eleven years and forty-nine days earlier. But
Greenwood's hopes for an instant team rapport were not realised, and
England struggled to contain a lively Swiss team. Only a succession of
fine saves by goalkeeper Ray Clemence prevented England from going down to
an embarrassing defeat.
