Diary

Friday, 31 August 2018 - Spanish coach Luis Enrique has picked his first squad for the upcoming inaugural Nations League matches against England and Croatia. Jordi Alba is the most notable omission from the 23-man squad. Gerard Piqué, David Silva and Andres Iniesta have all retired from international football. Koke and Iago Aspas have also been omitted. There are five representatives from the Premier League, four from Chelsea, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Cesar AzpIlićueta, Alvaro Morata and the returning Marcos Alonso. The fifth, Manchester United's goalkeeper, David de Gea, is expected to retain the number one jersey, despite an indifferent World Cup Finals.

Monday, 3 September 2018 -
Diego Costa has withdrawn from Spain's squad over "personal reasons", the Spanish Football Federation says. Atlético Madrid's 29-year-old former Chelsea striker will be replaced by Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas, 31.

Wednesday, 5 September 2018 - The squad numbers are revealed.

Thursday, 6 September 2018 -
Spanish Federation has announced the departure of Diego Llorente back to his club. The Real Sociedad defender was summoned by Luis Enrique in spite of his injury, as the coach wanted his new squad to bond with one another. The coach has been very aware of Llorente's injury and depends on him for the future of the national team. Llorente has done recovery work in Las Rozas and has attended all the teamtalks with Luis Enrique.

Friday, 7 September 2018 - The Spanish squad leave for England via the Aeropuerto Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas in Madrid. They arrive at London-Luton Airport in Luton three hours later.
