European, South American and World Football Teams of the 20th Century
Selected in 1998
Eleven England internationals were among 61 players nominated
for the MasterCard European Football Team of the Twentieth Century. The 11
were Gordon Banks, Bobby Charlton, Duncan Edwards, Tom Finney, Jimmy Greaves,
Eddie Hapgood, Tommy Lawton, Stanley Matthews, Bobby Moore, Frank Swift and
Billy Wright.
The Twentieth Century European team was chosen by some 130 journalists
from across the continent and announced on 7 May 1978. It included two
England players, Bobby Moore and Bobby Charlton.

Players chosen for the five Twentieth Century regional teams (Europe,
South America, North America/Central America/Caribbean Islands, Africa and Asia/Oceania)
became the nominees for the MasterCard World Football Team of the Twentieth
Century. That team was chosen by 250 journalists from around the world and
an international panel of experts and announced on 9 June 1998, the eve of the World Cup final tournament in France. It included one England
player, Bobby Moore, and consisted entirely of players from the European and
South American teams.
