Birth Sunday, 8 February 1880 in Beauty Bank, Stourbridge, Worcestershire.

Baptism Wednesday, 3 March 1880 at St. Thomas' Church in Stourbridge.
 

According to the 1881 census, a very young Joseph W. was living at 82 Enville Street in Stourbridge. He is the youngest of four children living with his parents, Henry and Joyce (née Long). His father is a boiler maker.

 

According to the 1891 census, William J, now a scholar, was now living at 78 Enville Street in Stourbridge. Still the youngest of four children. His father is still a boiler maker.

 

According to the 1901 census, William J., now a Professional Footballer, still living at 78 Enville Street. The only one of the children living with his parents.

First marriage to Annie Elizabeth Dando, on 4 August 1902 at St. Thomas' Church in Stourbridge, Worcestershire. Joseph is stated as a footballer living at 36 Brook Street, Annie is a neighbour living at 29.

Children Joe and Annie Bache had one child together, Joseph Edward (b.8 May 1903). Joseph was baptised on 27 May 1903, and they are living at 36 Brook Street.
  Annie Bache died, probably during, or just after, childbirth, on 8 May 1903, aged 23 years, and is buried in Stourbridge cemetery.
Second marriage to Rose Emma Devenport Brookes, on Monday, 3 June 1907, at St. Michael's Church in Cropthorne, Worcestershire. Rose is just nineteen years old.

Children Joe and Rose Bache had two children together, Joseph William (b.3 October 1910) and Joyce Elizabeth (b.1912).
 

His mother died in early 1906.
Worcestershire Electoral Registers state Joseph William is living in a one-room furnished first-floor lodgings in Brook Street, owned by his father, in 1905, and had moved onto Baylie Street by, at least, 1910.
According to the 1911 census, Joseph William, still a Professional Footballer, is married and living with his wife of three years, Rose Emma, at The Lindens, in Baylie Street, Stourbridge. They are also the parent of their six month old son, Joseph William.
 

"BACHE AWARDED DAMAGES ...At the Pershore County Court, on Friday, Joseph Bache, the Aston Villa footballer, was awarded £10 damages against a market gardener named Abbott, for injuries in a trap collision. Bache's case was that Abbott was driving an inadequately lighted vehicle on the wrong side of the road, and collided with his trap, throwing him, his wife, and child into the road. His hands and face were cut and the injuries affected his skill as a football player." - Express and Star, Monday, 18 November 1912.
 

By 1914-20, the Worcestershire Electoral Registers state Joseph William is living at The Bell Inn, 21 Beale Street in Cropthorne.
According to the 1921 census, Joseph William, still a professional football player and still married to Rosa, with another child, Joyce. They live at The Butts in Great Comberton with Rosa's younger sister and their widowed mother is a visitor, confirmed by the Worcestershire Electoral Registers in 1921 and at Great Hampton House by 1924, and at 113 Two Gates in Cradley by 1935-39.
His father died in mid-1922.

  "Joe Bache, the well-known old Aston Villa player, who has been living at Great Hampton House, Evesham, until quite recently, is leaving England. Otto Nery, who is an official of the German F.A., has been in England for three months studying English and Scottish football, and is taking Bache to Germany with him, where he will act as player-coach to the Mannheim Football Club." - Evesham Standard, Saturday, 25 October 1924.
"ONLY CIGARETTES ...Burglars' Poor Haul at Home of Former Footballer.
"Although Joe Bache, the well-known ex-footballer, formerly of Aston Villa, who now keeps the Travellers' Rest, near Aston Cross, Birmingham, was visited by burglars on Friday night, so far as can be ascertained at present nothing was taken except about 200 cigarettes. It appears that between nine and ten o'clock, when the inn was at its busiest, the burglars forced one of the back windows of the private apartments, climbing on the flat roof above the smoke room to do so. When Mr. Bache went upstairs after closing time, he found articles of clothing strewn all over the floors; but all the money was in the safe, which had not been touched. Mr. Bache thinks that the intruders must have been disturbed."

  According to the 1939 register, Joseph W. and Rose E.D. are still married, living at The Travellers Rest, at 108 Aston Road North in Aston, Birmingham, where Joseph is the manager.
Midlands Elcetoral Registers states the three Bache's, Joseph, Rose and Joyce, are at The Travellers Rest in 1939, but also in Cradley, at 50 Parkside Road (until at least 1946).
His wife, Rose, died in mid-1950.
Death Thursday, 10 November 1960, at a Birmingham hospital. He was living at 18 Summer Hill Terrace, St. Paul's, Birmingham, Warwickshire, at the time.

"DEATH OF MR. JOE BACHE
"Mr. Joe Bache, who captained Aston Villa's F.A. Cup winning team of 1904-05 and who played for Villa from 1901 to 1919-20, died in a Birmingham hospital yesterday. He was 80
. Mr. Bache, an inside forward and one of the finest footballers of his time, first played for Stourbridge, where he was born. He had his first trial for Villa just before his 21st birthday, and four years later he played inside-left for the cup-winning team of 1905. He was outside-left in the team which won the cup in 1913. He was also a regular member of the team which won the League Championship in 1910. He gained seven international caps. His last game for Villa was with the reserves at Kidderminster in April, 1919, but he returned to Villa Park as coach for a short time in the 1927-28 season. He left Villa to become player-coach to Mid-Rhondda F.C. at Tonypandy. For a time he coached Grimsby Town, and also coached Rot Weiss F.C. players at Frankfort. of Mr. Joe Bache.—The funeral took place at Cropthorne church on Saturday, of Mr. Joe Bache, who died in Birmingham earlier in the week. Mr. Bache had a distinguished career as a footballer, playing for Aston Villa in the years before the First World War. Family mourners were Mr. T. Bache, Mr. W. Baches (sons), Mr. R. Brooks, Mr. S. Brooks, Mr. G. Brooks, Mr. E. Mason, Mr. W. Cropper, Miss Houghton and Miss Haines were in church. The Rev. W. P. Wylie conducted the service, and Mrs. Cole was at the organ." - The Tewkesbury Register & Gazette, Friday, 18 November 1960.

Playing Career

Began his career with Bewdley Victoria before joining Stourbridge FC. He joined Aston Villa FC for a £100 transfer fee in December 1900. He later became the Villa captain. He made a war-time guest appearance with Notts County FC. He joined Mid-Rhondda FC as player-manager in August 1920 and then Grimsby Town FC as player-coach on 20 July 1920 to 1921. After which he became a coach in Germany for four years, including a spell as player-coach with VFR Mannheim from October 1924.
