Timeline |
|
Ernest Blenkinsop |
Birth |
20 April 1902 in Cudworth,
West Riding of Yorkshire
[registered in
Barnsley, June 1902].
Attended St John's Road School, Cudworth |
|
According to the 1911 census,
Ernest is the fifth of seven children (two had left home, another died) to James Hollings and Annie
Elizabeth (née Green), living at 12 Church Street in Cudworth. His
father is a colliery onsetter. |
|
According to the 1921
census, Ernest is a miner at the local colliery and is the
middle of three sons still living at home with their parents
still at 12 Church Street. |
Marriage |
Winifred Stewart,
1 June 1926 at Wadsley Church, Sheffield [registered in
Sheffield, June 1926]. The
reception was held at Wadsley Social Club, and they
honeymooned in Blackpool. They had two children, Beryl
(b.21 September 1930) and
Barry (b.24 October 1931). |
|
When he married in 1926,
Ernest was living in Parkside Road, in Hillsborough, Sheffield. By
1930, he was living in Lennox Road, also in Hillsborough. In 1934,
following his move to Liverpool FC, he was living in the clubhouse at
Anfield. |
"Blenkinsop worked in the
Grimesthorpe & Brierley pits from the age of 13½ to
about 18. On one occasion there was a roof fall in a gallery
and he threw himself to the floor and to one side to save
himself from death and serious injury. If he had remained
standing he would have been killed, as it was he was buried by
the debris." - Hull Daily Mail, 20 May 1933 |
|
According to the 1939 register, Ernest is an iron foundry
labourer, married to Winifred and living at 64 Parkside Road
in the Hillsborough area of Sheffield, next to the Wednesday
ground, with their children. |
Death |
24 April 1969

67 years 4 days [registered in Sheffield, June 1969].

Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Played junior
football before playing for Cudworth Village FC in the Barnsley
Association League Senior Division.
Despite persuasions from
Doncaster Rovers FC, he signed for Hull
City FC for £100 and a barrel of beer (80 pints) on 10 October 1921. Ernest himself picked up a signing-on fee of £10 and wage of £5 a week.
However, after only eleven league
appearances for Hull, he signed with The Wednesday FC
on 20 January 1923.
The transfer fee was reported as being £1250. The Sheffield club intended
buying Bell, but he was injured. Also in 1923, he played
for the British Gas works football team. Following a successful eleven years
in which he featured in 393 league
appearances, scoring five goals, Blenkinsop signed for Liverpool FC
for £6000 on 15 March 1934, and after 71
league appearances, and after he was placed on the
transfer list in the September, he moved onto Cardiff City FC on 26 November 1937,
making a final ten league
appearances.
Despite retiring in 1939, Blenkinsop made guest appearances in wartime for
Buxton FC, Halifax Town FC, Bradford City AFC and Bradford FC. |
