"PLAYERS'
CLAIMS FOR DAMAGES FAILS.
"Harry Chambers, the
Liverpool footballer, failed in an action at Liverpool Assizes on Monday
to recover damages for injuries in a road smash. "He alleged that
Leonard Favell Gee, a tin box manufacturer, while driving a motor-car ran
into him while he was cycling and injured his knee. "The result was
that after playing in 96 consecutive matches he was dropped from the
Liverpool team because, owing to leg cramp, he could not keep up the pace.
"Chambers denied that a
basket full of beer bottles was on his handle-bars, but the defence called
witnesses, including a policeman, who said that this was the case. At a
previous hearing it was stated that Chambers had gone on the bicycle to
get beer and cigarettes for a party he was attending. "Judgment was
entered for Gee with costs." - Tuesday, 8 November 1927, The
Daily Mail |

Willington United Methodists FC. He was playing with North Shields
Athletic FC when Liverpool
FC signed him in April 1915. During WW1, he guested for Belfast Distillery
FC and Glentoran FC. Chambers placed himself on the transfer list in March 1926 at his own request,
in an effort to join Burnley FC, who were negotiating to sign him. The
deal failed to materialise. After 310 league appearances and 135
goals scored, he joined West Bromwich Albion FC on 8 March
1928, repositioning himself as a centre-half. Joined Oakengates Town FC as
player-manager in July 1929. He was sold to Hereford United AFC on 17
January 1933. A move that ensured the survival of the Oakengates club. |
