Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Began his
footballing career as an amateur at Bolton Wanderers FC in July 1959 after
he represented Lancashire Schools. He turned professional at Burnden Park
in May 1961. Lee began the 1967-68 season on the transfer list and he
eventually joined Joe Mercer's Manchester City FC for a £60,000 transfer fee
on 9 October 1967. But not before he declined a £35,000 (+Terry Wharton) move to Wolverhampton Wanderers FC,
which was agreed on 20 September 1967. Stoke City FC made an attempt
shortly afterwards, but this was declined by the club as no player
exchange was involved. The Football League held up his registration, after
City attempted to sign him on 6th. After a successful period at Maine Road,
Lee almost joined Nottingham Forest FC on 12 August 1974, but instead left to join
Derby County FC two days later for £110,000, as they allowed him to
remain at his home near Bolton at to remain training with the City players
for part of the week. He announced his retirement from the game on 21
April 1976, to take effect at the end of his contract in June. However, he
had agreed to play four matches for Australian side, St. George-Budapest,
for £750 per match, scoring in his first, on 19 May 1976. Prescot
Town FC attempted to sign Lee the following month and before the end of
the year, so did Derby County FC. |
