Club Career |
Club(s) |
Represented Liverpool County as a schoolboy. Everton FC
signed Royle as an apprentice in July 1964, despite interest from
Manchester United FC. He turned professional in August 1966.
He would score 102 goals in 232 league appearances, before
Manchester City FC spent 170,000 pounds transfer fee in December 1974.
Spent another 99 league appearances, scoring 23
goals, when he was loaned to Bristol City FC in November 1977,
joining permanently a month later. He scored
just eighteen goals in 101 league outings. Joined Norwich City FC
in August 1980 for 60,000 pounds and scored nine goals in 42
league appearances, before a knee injury force him to retire in
April 1982. |

Management Career |
Club(s) |
Became the league's youngest manager when Oldham Athletic FC made
Royle their manager in July 1982 and spent the next twelve years before a
return to Goodison Park. During which time he was shortlisted for the
England job in 1990. Spent three years at Everton FC from 10 November 1994
until his resignation on 27 March 1997. Returned to Maine Road in February 1998
and spent another three years as manager at Manchester City FC, until he
was sacked on 21 May 2001 following relegation. Took over at Ipswich Town
FC from November 2002 until May 2006, when he left 'by mutual consent'. In
November 2007, Royle was linked to both the WIgan Athletic FC and
Leicester City FC's vacant managerial posts. Spent time back at Oldham
Athletic FC from 15 March 2009 until the end of the season. Rejoined
Everton FC in July 2014 as Youth Development Officer. After Martinez was
sacked by Everton FC, Royle assisted David Unsworth in the final Premier
League game of the season on 15 May 2016. Everton FC ran out 3-0 winners
over Norwich City FC. Rumours followed that he would become the Director
of Football at the club. |

On 25 March 1970, Sir Alf Ramsey announced a 28-man provisional squad
to take to Mexico. Sir Alf named a
further twelve reserves, who were inoculated
and received medical certificates for one simple reason; any one of them
could be called in an emergency.
Those given 'reserve' status included Joe Royle.
