Smith signed professional forms with a Leeds United AFC on 26 March 1998
after he was a trainee with the club. Following 38 goals in 172
Premier League appearances, Leeds were relegated and faced going out of
business, Smith was forced to sign for
rivals, Manchester United FC on 26 May 2004 for £7m. United
had offered an upfront payment, greatly valued and necessary for Leeds.
Everton FC and Newcastle United FC had both attempted to sign Smith, but
offered only transfer fee instalments. After 61 Premier League
appearances and seven goals, Smith eventually joined Newcastle
United FC for £6m on 3 August 2007. He made 84 league
appearances without scoring any goals, he was allowed to leave United
from June 2011, with Leeds United AFC showing interest, but it was not
until MK Dons signed Smith on loan on 29 January 2012 that he played
again. He scored once in sixteen League One appearances. After
Newcastle released Smith on 1 June 2012, he was signed by MK on 10 July
2012, and scored another goal in 51 League One outings. He was
released on 16 May 2014. Notts County FC signed Smith four days later as
their new player-coach. Smith had one match in charge as caretaker, losing
his one match in January 2017. Up until 2017-18, he had made
86 league
appearances. |
