Club Career

Club(s) Signed as an Aston Villa FC apprentice on 18 May 1982. After 181 league appearances and 39 goals, Rangers FC paid £½million for his services on 31 December 1987, where he scored 32 goals in 106 Scottish Premier League appearances. Everton FC made a £1 million enquiry on Walters while he was on England duty in Malaysia. But it was Liverpool FC that brought him back to England on 13 August 1991 for £1¼ million. He returned 94 league appearances with fourteen goals, during which time he was loaned to Stoke City FC, a transfer deadline day deal on 24 March 1994. Walters scored twice in nine league outings before the season's ending. The following season, on 9 September 1994, Walters was loaned to Wolverhampton Wanderers FC, where he scored three goals in nine league appearances. Eventually, Walters was allowed to leave Liverpool FC on a free, and it was Southampton FC, on 18 January 1996, that signed Walters, but he only made five Premier League appearances before being allowed to leave for Swindon Town FC on 31 July 1996, where he made 112 league appearances and scored 27 goals, until he was released on 17 November 1999. His wages being to blame. The 35-year old signed for Bristol Rovers FC, and following 82 league appearances and thirteen goals, he retired on 26 April 2002 having made eaxactly 600 league appearances, and scoring 128 goals.

Beyond England

Walters joined Coventry Preparatory School as a Saturday morning football coach for the youngsters in February 2003, becoming a full member of staff in January 2006, and is also head coach of the under-14s at the Aston Villa FC academy. He is also Head of Languages at the academy.
