Description
Predominantly yellow shirt broad-striped with teal, turquoise, purple and yellow marble-effect, covered with teal, navy-blue and purple striped crossover in the middle of the chest. Navy-blue cuffs, with teal, turquoise and purple marble-effect on the left sleeve and a plain yellow right sleeve with two huge, embossed concentric diamonds across the back of the sleeve. Navy-blue collar, with a yellow front and 'UMBRO' in capitalised navy-blue lettering below. Embroidered emblem in the middle of the chest. Plain navy-blue number one on back. Long yellow shorts with teal, turquoise and purple marble-effect in a stripe on left seam, continuing pattern from left sleeve, reaching a point in the middle, pointing to the right side. Broad teal stripe alongside pattern on left seam. 'UMBRO' in capitalised navy-blue lettering on left thigh and embroidered emblem on right thigh. Yellow socks with sets of two navy-blue concentric diamonds repeating around each turnover, edged with two teal hoops.
Variations
  • Ian Walker wore number 13 against Hungary and China.

  • For the four games in the 1996 European Championship final tournament, SEAMAN was printed in capitalised navy blue lettering above the number on the back of the shirt.

  • With the exception of the game with the Netherlands, England had logos sewn-on to the upper sleeves for the 1996 European Championship fixtures. The 'Euro '96' tournament logo was on the right arm and the UEFA Fair Play logo was on the left arm.

  • For the last seven games in which the kit was worn, a navy-blue number one was worn in the centre of the chest in a yellow rectangle, beneath the emblem, in the same font as on the back of the shirt, and there was only one set of smaller diamonds on the front of the socks, with the upper teal hoop rising when in-line.

Penalties Conceded

1 - David Seaman (plus two in a shootout)

  • Switzerland's Turkyilmaz equalised from the spot in the opening match of the 1996 European Championship.

Penalties MIssed

2 - David Seaman (plus two in a shootout)

  • As well as saving against Scotland's Gary McAllister (with his elbow), he watched Hierro of Spain hit their first kick of the shootout against his crossbar, before saving the deciding kick from Nadal to send England into the semi-finals.

  • In the first match of the following season, Moldova's Testimitanu also hit the bar from a penalty.

This kit was on duty for England's first four matches of the 1996 European Championship, and David Seaman, in particular, did it proud.

These were probably his greatest moments playing for England. Firstly, saving Gary McAllister's penalty against Scotland, just before Paul Gascoigne secured a most important victory with the second goal. Then, in the quarter-final shootout, against Spain, he made the save that took England into the semi-finals. Admittedly, they lost there, but he had been obliged to wear the hideous red second kit.

He had missed the previous year's Umbro Cup tournament after breaking his ankle on an end-of-season tour with Arsenal. Tim Flowers had deputised, but Seaman was back as number one in the following season and Euro '96 pretty much secured his position for several years to come.

For 14 of the 15 matches when this kit was worn, it was paired with the 1995 white kit. The exception was its final appearance when the outfield kit had changed, but not the keeper's. Ian Walker made his first start against Italy in a crucial World Cup qualifier, when Seaman was again injured, but Glenn Hoddle's faith in the Tottenham goalkeeper was not rewarded as England lost their first ever home World Cup tie and Walker never started another England game.

The number 22 shirt (above left) was issued to Ian Walker for the Euro '96 tournament. It appears by kind permission of the National Football Shirt Collection (England Match Shirts), also part of the Neville Evans Collection (curator Simon Shakeshaft).

Above right are front and back views of Michael Oakes' Under-21 shirt. It is part of Ed Holland's Wolves Football Shirts Instagram collection.
