Description

Olive green shirt with yellow v-shaped chest covered in tiny black circles. Black v-neck collar, edged with a yellow stripe, and black triangular inset. Black outer sleeves and cuffs, with yellow inner sleeves, covered in tiny black circles and edged with black stripe around armpit. 'UMBRO' in large capitalised black lettering below the collar, inside a yellow rectangle, edged in black. Embroidered emblem, with light-blue lions in the middle of the chest, and white registered trademark underneath left-hand side of emblem. 'ENGLAND' in capitalised white lettering below it. White number one, with black border, on back and in the centre of the chest, beneath the emblem, in different font to outfield shirts. Long olive green shorts with 'UMBRO' in large capitalised black lettering, inside a yellow rectangle, edged in black on left thigh. Embroidered emblem on right thigh, with 'ENGLAND' in capitalised white lettering below it. White number one, with black border in the same font as on the shirt, above the emblem on right thigh. White socks with 'UMBRO' in capitalised black lettering around the tops.
Variations
  • Against Argentina, 'FIFA WORLD CUP FRANCE 1998' was displayed in white directly above the number one on the chest and SEAMAN was printed in an arc in capitalised white lettering, with a black border, above the number one on the reverse of the shirt.
  • Nigel Martyn wore number 13 against France.

The colour of this kit was subject to much debate. From a distance, it appears to be predominantly bronze, with a yellow chest, but very close scrutiny reveals that it is, in fact, olive green, with a, sort of, metallic glow to it. The chest (and underarms) is, indeed, yellow, but with small black circles on it.

A matching pair of olive shorts and white socks completes the ensemble, and, thankfully, this kit signified the end of Umbro's dalliance with high fashion in the 1990s. The next goalkeeper's outfit was back to good old yellow.

The shirt in the photos above, modified to include the words FIFA WORLD CUP FRANCE 1998 in white underneath the emblem, was issued to David Seaman for the World Cup tournament, but it is not the one worn in the classic encounter against Argentina. It appears here by kind permission of the National Football Shirt Collection (England Match Shirts), also part of the Neville Evans Collection (curator Simon Shakeshaft).
