Embroidered emblem on left breast, with 'ENGLAND' in capitalised white lettering inside a navy-blue panel above the emblem. Two embroidered navy-blue concentric diamonds on right breast, with 'UMBRO' in capitalised navy-blue lettering underneath and a registered trademark placed above the gap between the 'R' and the 'O' in navy blue. Navy-blue number one on back and in centre of chest, in same font as outfield shirts. Navy-blue shorts with thin yellow seams. Two embroidered yellow concentric diamonds on left thigh, with 'UMBRO' in capitalised yellow lettering underneath and a registered trademark placed above the gap between the 'R' and the 'O' in yellow. Yellow number one, in the same font as on the shirt, above the Umbro logo on left thigh. Embroidered emblem on right thigh, with 'ENGLAND' in capitalised white lettering inside a navy-blue panel above the emblem. Navy-blue socks. 'UMBRO' in large capitalised yellow lettering across turnovers edged with yellow hoop and along right side of footing.
Variations
  • David Seaman wore navy-blue tracksuit trousers with white seams, with the navy-blue socks over the top of them, against Bulgaria.
  • For the two games played in the 2000 European Championship final tournament, SEAMAN was printed above the number on the back, in capitalised navy-blue lettering in the same font as the numbers.
  • England had logos sewn-on to the upper sleeves for the 2000 European Championship tournament fixtures. The 'Euro 2000' tournament logo was on the right arm and the UEFA Fair Play logo was on the left arm (see below).
Appearances

9 - David Seaman

2 - Nigel Martyn

1 - David James, Richard Wright

  • Wright won the first of his two caps in an eventful pre-Euro 2000 game in Malta.

Penalties Missed

2 - Richard Wright

  • Although Malta's David Carabott hit the post, it rebounded in off Wright, giving the debutant an unfortunate own goal.

  • Carabott then took a second penalty with just two minutes remaining. Wright saved with his feet.

After the excessive fashion statements of the mid-nineties, the England goalkeeper's kit finally settled down to a fairly plain yellow jersey, with navy-blue shorts and socks.

The wearing of it was still the main preserve of David Seaman, with Kevin Keegan agreeing with the judgement of his two permanent predecessors (Venables and Hoddle) in naming him first choice, with Leeds United's Nigel Martyn stepping in when the Arsenal goalkeeper was injured.

The signed shirt in the photos above was worn by David Seaman in the European Championship play-off second leg, against Scotland, where, despite defeat, England qualified for Euro 2000. It appears here by kind permission of the National Football Shirt Collection (England Match Shirts), also part of the Neville Evans Collection (curator Simon Shakeshaft).
