Notes

England did not enter the first European Nations Cup of 1960 and failed to qualify for the European Nations Cup final tournament of 1964 and the European Championship final tournaments of 1972, 1976 and 1984.

A final match has determined first and second place throughout the tournament's history.  To and including the 1980 tournament, a third-place match determined third and fourth place, but it has not been held in later tournaments.  For those later tournaments, we have credited both semi-finalists failing to reach the final match with a third-place finish, and thus we have given England a shared third place in the 1996 tournament.  Rankings beyond those determined by final and third-place matches are unofficial and are based on, in order,  stage of the competition reached, points earned, goal difference and number of goals scored.

To and including the 1992 final tournament, two points were awarded for a win and one for a draw.  In the later tournaments, a win earned three points and a draw one.

Matches ending with the score level after extra time are recorded as draws under accepted custom.  The ensuing penalty kicks contest determines only which team advances to the competition's next stage, not the result of the match.

Because the third place match was discontinued beginning with the 1984 tournament, we have credited a third place finish to both semi-finalists failing to reach the final match in all the competitions since 1984.

Notes

The points totals have been calculated on the basis of two points for a win and one point for a draw, the practice in European Championship tournaments to and including 1992, rather than three points for a win and one for a draw, the practice beginning with the 1996 tournament.  Again, matches ending with the score level after extra time are recorded as draws under accepted custom since the ensuing penalty kicks contest determines only which team advances to the competition's next stage, not the result of the match.
