Squad details correct up to
and including Germany's match against Hungary on 23 June 2021. Tallies taken from DFB
Diary
Tuesday, 9 March 2021 - Joachim
Löw will step down from his role as Germany manager after this summer's
European Championship Finals. The 61 year-old has been in charge since
replacing Jurgen Klinsmann in 2006. He had a contract until the end
of the 2022 World Cup but approached the DFB to end it early.
Tuesday, 4 May 2021 -
Teams will be allowed to
select a 26-player squad instead of 23 at this summer's delayed European
Championship Finals. The change has been implemented to lessen the load on
players after a club season compressed because of the coronavirus
pandemic. It will also help managers adapt if outbreaks occur during the
tournament. Wednesday, 19
May 2021 - Bayern Munich striker Thomas Müller
and Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels have been recalled to the
Germany squad for Euro 2020. Löw has picked the pair into his 26-man
squad, despite having told them in March 2019 that he would never select
them again. Müller has scored eleven goals and registered eighteen assists
in helping Bayern win the Bundesliga. Hummels won the German Cup with
Dortmund. Munich's 18 year-old attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala has also
been picked by Löw. Musiala chose to play for Germany over England and
Nigeria.
Friday, 21 May 2021 -
Bayern Munich's departing manager Hansi Flick says he is close to agreeing
a new deal to become the new Germany manager following Euro 2020. Flick
announced in April that he was leaving Bayern at the end of the season. He
was previously Löw's assistant before stepping down after the 2014 World
Cup victory in Brazil.
Tuesday, 25 May 2021 -
Bayern Munich's Hansi Flick has agreed a new deal to become the new
Germany manager until 2024.
Friday, 28 May 2021
- Many of the German squad begin arriving at the Olympiaregion Seefeld,
where they will undergo training sessions.
Sunday, 30 May
2021 -
Toni Kroos arrives at the Olympiaregion Seefeld.
Wednesday, 2 June 2021 -
Germany 1 Denmark 1 - Thomas
Müller and Mats Hummels made their first appearances for Germany since
2018 as they drew with Denmark. Florian Neuhaus scored the opening goal
after a fortunate ricochet in the box. Yussuf Poulsen ran onto Christian
Eriksen's through ball to slam in an equaliser with a rare Danish chance.
Germany were disappointing - but below strength, with four players yet to
join the squad after playing in the Champions League Final and Toni Kroos
not yet fully fit after suffering with Covid19.
Thursday, 3 June 2021 - The
players that featured in the Champions League Final have arrived at the
Olympiaregion Seefeld. Ilkay Gündoğan, Kai Havertz and Timo
Werner complete the squad.
Monday, 7 June 2021 - Germany 7 Latvia 1 -
Thomas Müller scored his first international goal in more than two years
as Germany crushed Latvia 7-1 in their final Euro 2020 warm-up game. First
half strikes by Robin Gosens, Ilkay Gündoğan, Müller, Serge Gnabry and an
own goal put the game to bed by the break. Captain Manuel Neuer became the
first German goalkeeper to reach 100 appearances. Löw made four changes to
the team that drew with Denmark last week. Thursday, 10
June 2021 -
The German squad have moved into their base camp ahead of Euro 2020.
Inspired by their location, Campo Bahia, in Brazil for their successful
2014 campaign, Oliver Bierhoff wants the location's team spirit to
resonate. Home Ground
in Herzogenaurach, the birthplace of Adidas and Puma, will be home to the
squad and training will take place in the Adi-Dassler stadium.
Tuesday, 15 June 2021 - France 1 Germany 0 -
World Champions France started their Euro 2020 campaign with a win
over Germany thanks to a Mats Hummels' own goal in a high-quality
heavyweight Group F match. Hummels diverted Lucas Hernandez's cross into
his own net in the first half of a fascinating contest in Munich. Germany
came into the Finals with big questions over their best starting XI as
well as their chances of success after an uncharacteristically turbulent
few years, but proved competitive finals opponents. Their was a hint that
defender Antonio Rüdiger may have bitten the shoulder of Paul Pogba, but
replays proved inconclusive.
Wednesday, 16 June 2021 -
Several people have been taken to hospital to receive treatment for
injuries caused by a protester who parachuted into the Allianz Arena
during last night's match. UEFA said 'law authorities will take the
necessary action' for what it called a 'reckless and dangerous' act.
Debris fell onto the pitch and stands when the parachutist got tangled in
wires carrying an overhead camera. The man landed heavily on the pitch.
Saturday, 19 June 2021 - Portugal 2 Germany 4
- Germany got off the mark in style at Euro 2020 as they tore
Portugal apart with an impressive attacking performance in Munich to throw
group F wide open. Germany's win means both sides now sit on three points,
one behind leaders France, heading into the final round of matches.
Atalanta wing-back Robin Gosens was the architect with a goal and an
assist, earning an ovation from the crowd as he replaced after an hour.
Cristiano Ronaldo put the visitors ahead, but two own goals in the space
of five first-half minutes flipped an entertaining encounter in Germany's
favour, as first Ruben Dias and then Raphael Guerreiro turned into their
own net. The influential Gosens laid on a third immediately after the
break with an inviting ball that allowed Kai Havertz to tap in from close
range, before heading in Germany's fourth himself.
Wednesday, 23 June
2021 - Germany 2 Hungary 2 - Germany will face England in the last 16 after twice
coming from behind to knock battling Hungary out of the tournament.
Andras Schafer thought he had won it for the Hungarians with a header - 90
seconds after Kai Havertz had equalised - before substitute Leon Goretzka
made it 2-2 with six minutes remaining. The first appearance of Jamal
Musiala ensures he becomes Germany's youngest player at a Major Tournament
Finals.
