	Beckham's was his first at
international level. He went on to become the first player to score for
England in three World Cup tournaments and his 17th and last international
goal was just like his first, a free kick against South American opposition
(Ecuador) in the World Cup (2006).
Anderton's was his sixth of a
total seven in his England career. |

  England's
2-0 victory on a warm Friday night in Lens was their most convincing performance
of the tournament and secured their
place in the last 16, where they were knocked out by Argentina, on penalties,
following a classic duel.
It was a welcome reappearance for the red shirt not
seen since England won Le Tournoi, twelve months earlier. The combination of red
shirts, with white shorts and socks was worn for only the sixth time in
England's history and the first since the opening match of the 1982 World Cup,
against France. They did not repeat the combination for another 21 years and
	  they remain unbeaten
in it.
As the red kit incorporated a different font for
names and numbers to that of the
	  white, it
did not quite match when the white shorts were interchanged to provide an
all-white kit against Argentina. A further inconsistency on the two World
Cup kits was that the names on the back of the red shirt were printed in a
straight line, whereas on the white shirt, they were in an arc. |
