Diary
Monday, 3 February
1908 - 'The amateur
internationals with Austria were fixed for June 6 and 8 in
Vienna, and those with Hungary at Budapest and with Bohemia at
Prague will take place later in Whit week."
Monday, 9 March
1908 - At the same Committee meeting that saw
the England team chosen to face Wales, the Amateur team chosen
to face France, the semi-final draws of the FA Cup and FA
Amateur Cup are made, the fixtures of the Continental Tour of
Europe are confirmed.
"The following international matches are to be played
on the Continent by teams selected from amateurs and
professionals:—June 6th, England v. Austria, at Vienna; June 8,
England v. Austria, return at Vienna; June 10, England v.
Hungary, at Buda Pesth; June 13, England v. Bohemia, at
Prague."
Wednesday, 29 April 1908 -
The party that will represent England on the continental tour
of Austria and Hungary in June has been chosen.
Saturday, 2 May 1908 -
"Harry Stapley, West Ham's
International centre forward, has notified the club of the
advisability of securing another centre forward as owing to
his health, it is doubtful if he will be able to take part in
regular serious football again."
Saturday, 16 May 1908 -
"K. R. G. Hunt (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Lintott (Queen's
Park Rangers), and H. Stapley (West Ham) are unable to get
away, and their places will be filled by R. M. Hawkes,
Wedlock, and Hilsdon. Ducat (Woolwich Arsenal) is ubale to
accept the invitation to travel as reserve, owing to his
cricket engagements."
Sunday, 24 May 1908 - "Buda-Pesth—The Manchester United
F.C. team to-day played a match against the Ferencvaro el
Tornaklub, and won 7—0. A large crowd witnessed the play.
Considerable uproar arose during the match, the onlookers
alleging that the Englishmen had infringed the rules of the
game. The referee also found fault with the Englishmen's play,
but he subsequently withdrew his remarks. the visitors pointing
out that they were keeping within the rules of the game as
played in England. The crowd pelted the visitors with stones,
but only one of the team was hit, sustaining a small bruise on
the head. It was only owing to the intervention of the police
that the Englishmen were able to leave the ground without
further molestation." "The arrangements have been completed
for the England team of footballers who will go to Austria at
the beginning of June under the auspices of the Football
Association to play two international matches at Vienna, one
at Buda-Pesth, and one at Prague. The England team, which is a
strong all-round combination, will leave London on June 3."
Wednesday, 3 June 1908 -
"The powerful England team chosen by the F.A. International
Selection Committee to represent this country in a series of
matches against Austria, Hungary, and Bohemia. The party
assembled at the Windsor Hotel, Victoria-street, S.W., and left [this]
morning by the 9.45 train from Victoria. Mr. C. J. Hughes is
in charge of the party which will also include Messrs C.
Crump, R. P. Gregson, H. Walker, Morgan T. Roberts, and G.
Wagstaffe Simmons, members of the International Selection
Committee; Mr. W. McGregor; and Mr. F. J. Wall, the secretary.
Mr. D. B. Woolfall is not accompanying the party, having to
return home owing to illness." "Messrs. D.B. Woolfall and F.
J. Wall, two of the officials accompanying the team, will
represent the F.A. at the meeting of International Federation
at Vienna, when France will raise the question of admitting
the Amateur Association to membership of the Federation."
Saturday, 6 June 1908 - Austria 1
England 6 -
"The representative English football team which is now on tour defeated an Austrian team at Vienna on Saturday composed of players from Vienna and Prague, by 6 goals to 1. The game was a good one and extremely fast, and passed off with the slightest hitch. The Austrians showed better defence than has ever been seen in Vienna before. Torrential rains which fell earlier in the afternoon nearly prevented play, and a part of the grandstand was under water, but a large and fashionable crowd witnessed the game."
Monday, 8 June 1908 - Austria 1
England 11 -
"A return game of Association football between England and Austria was played on Monday evening, and resulted in an overwhelming victory by the English team by eleven goals to one. The Englishmen showed some exceedingly pretty combination, and the Viennese critics declared they had never seen such wonderful play. Some six thousand witnessed the match, and heartily cheered the English players at the finish." |
