His WW1 Army Records
state that Horace is living at 32 Portland Street, Derby, at the time of his
enlistment, 26 November 1915, to the Railway Operating Division of the
Royal Engineers. He demobilised in 1919 with the rank of Corporal due to
disability to The Shanty in Hazelwood. His
father died 15 June 1918. According to the 1921 census, Horace Peter, still a
railway clerk (for the Midland Railway Company) is now married to Minnie
Dorothy, and they have one son, Peter. They are visiting the home
of Minnie's parents at The Stanby in Hazelwood. His mother died in
1933 |

According to the 1939 register, Horace P., a railway
clerk, and Minnie D. remain married and are living at 39 Jennings Road in
St. Albans, with their son, Peter R.. Bedfordshire Electoral
Registers state Horace Bailey is at 3 Common Road for at least the final
two years of his life. |

He was a
goalkeeper who began his career in 1899 with Derby County FC reserves and
subsequently played for Crich FC,
Ripley Athletic FC, Leicester Imperial FC and Leicester Fosse FC, before
rejoining Derby County FC in April 1909. He assisted Blackburn Rovers FC
in August 1910 whilst their goalkeeper, Jimmy Ashcroft, recovered from an
eye injury.
He finished his career with spells at Stoke FC and Birmingham FC in
February 1911. Although a
good 'keeper', a number of disasters befell him, not least when he was on
the wrong end of a 12-0 defeat by Nottingham Forest FC when in goal for
Fosse. |
