his career playing with East Durham
Schools, Horden Colliery Welfare FC, and signed with Sunderland AFC on amateur forms in
June 1949, turning professional in February 1951. He
went on to make 403 league appearances, scoring 31 goals. Joined Newcastle
United FC in November 1963 in £19,000,
another 81 league appearances and thirteen goals followed. Remained in the north-east
when he joined Middlesbrough FC in November 1965 for £11,500 as a
player-coach, featuring in 21 league
appearances, scoring twice. |

Club(s) |
After retiring
from playing with Middlesbrough FC, he became their team manager in April
1966 until resigning in January 1973. Left these shores when he took
over as AEK manager in Turkey in August 1973, until April 1974.
Coached PanAthínaikos in May 1974, before returning to London with Queen's Park Rangers FC, taking up a coaching role in June 1974, took over as
caretaker manager in September and October of 1974. Became scout of
Manchester City FC in December 1974. Became manager of Doncaster
Rovers FC in February 1975. Assistant manager of Bolton Wanderers FC
in November 1978, becoming manager in February 1980 until resigning in May
1981. Became scout for various clubs, include Newcastle United FC. |
