Played
schoolboy football in Horwich, earning a trial with Bolton Wanderers FC,
which was not acted upon. Joined the Royal Marines, and while playing for
them against the Plymouth 'A' side,
he
subsequently joined Plymouth Argyle FC, firstly as an amateur on 23
September 1947, then signed
professional forms after he was demobilised in November 1947. Astall joined Birmingham City FC

decided not to retain him, with offers from Exeter City FC, Crystal Palace
FC and Cambridge City FC, Astall signed for Torquay United FC
on 13 May 1961. Astall retired at the end of the 1962-63 season. |
