the three year-old Wilfred is the fourth of five children, all sons
(another three siblings had died), to William and Elizabeth (née Reynolds), living at 26 Middlecliff Cottages in Little Houghton, Barnsley. His father is a
labourer at the colliery. |
According to the 1939 register, Wilfred, a professional footballer, is
married to Iva (records blocked), and is living at 98 Cross Flatt Street
in the Beeston area of Leeds, where he is also a City Police Reserve. |

Started
his career with Dearne Valley Old Boys FC, and also played in his local
side, Middlecliff Rovers FC. He had an unsuccessful trial with Barnsley
FC. Leeds
United AFC signed him in as an amateur on 25 February 1929, turning professional
in August 1930. After 162 league appearances, Arsenal FC paid a £8000
transfer fee for Copping on 2 June 1934 and made 166 Division One
appearances. He returned to Leeds United AFC on 3
March 1939 and managed to fit in another twelve league
appearances before war broke out. He retired from playing during
the war, but not before he guested for Hartlepools United FC and Doncaster
Rovers FC both in 1940. |

Originally a miner, before he earned
his profession as a footballer. After he was demobilised, Copping coached
Royal Beerschot AC, Belgium, until he was appointed trainer at Southend United FC
on 27 July 1946. Became a trainer at Bristol City FC on 13 July 1954 and then
trained the Coventry City FC players from 15 November 1956 until 4 June 1959. He
retired to Southend-on-Sea. -
