Club Career

Club(s) Began his junior career playing for his works team, Astley & Tyldesley Collieries FC of the Bolton Combination. Hassall then joined Huddersfield Town AFC before September 1946. After 26 goals in 74 league appearances, Bolton Wanderers FC paid a £25,000 transfer fee for his services on 3 January 1952, the talks took three weeks to complete after Wolverhampton Wanderers FC's attempts to prise Hassall away from Leeds Road broke down, despite offering Jesse Pye as part of the exchange. Shortly after the transfer, rumours were reported that Hassall was on his way to Derby County FC, in exhange for Johnny Morris. Hassall was placed on the transfer list at the beginning of the next season. Then tragically, in a match against Chelsea on New Year's Day 1955, Hassall broke his knee-cap, despite making a good recovery, under advice, Hassall called time on his career on 10 December 1955, he had made 102 league appearances, scoring 34 goals.

Beyond England

Harold was a schoolmaster during his playing days, and after retirement, from 1962, he became a lecturer on Physical Trainer at the Padgate College of Education in Warrington, and from 1966, the senior lecturer. At the same time, he was an FA coach at Lilleshall, being awarded a membership on the FIFA panel of coaches, also in 1966. Had a spell as Malayan coach in 1968-70.
