Began his junior career playing for
his works team, Astley & Tyldesley Collieries FC of the Bolton
Combination. Hassall then joined Huddersfield Town AFC before September
1946. After 26 goals in 74 league appearances, Bolton
Wanderers FC paid a £25,000 transfer fee for his services on 3 January
1952, the talks took three weeks to complete after Wolverhampton Wanderers
FC's attempts to prise Hassall away from Leeds Road broke down, despite
offering Jesse Pye
as part of the exchange. Shortly after the transfer, rumours were reported
that Hassall was on his way to Derby County FC, in exhange for
Johnny Morris.
Hassall was placed on the transfer list at the beginning of the next
season. Then tragically, in a match against Chelsea on New Year's Day
1955, Hassall broke his knee-cap, despite making a good recovery, under
advice, Hassall called time on his career on 10 December 1955, he
had made 102 league appearances, scoring 34 goals. |
