Played his
junior football in Birmingham, particularly with the YMCA and South
Birmingham Schools, alongside Gil Merrick. Birmingham City FC beat Preston
North End FC and signed Owen as an amateur in October 1945, and
made just five Second Division appearances as a left-half before
Luton Town AFC paid £1500 for his transfer in June 1947 and moved him to
the centre. He remained at Kenilworth Road until his retirement from
playing in May 1959, having made 388 league appearances and
scoring three goals. |

After his retirement, Syd Owen remained at Kenilworth Road when he became
manager on 29 April 1959, effective 3 May and for the 1959-60 season.
After undue criticism from his chairman for a poor season, Owen resigned
on 23 April 1960, he soon took up a coaching role at Leeds United AFC from
May 1960 until October 1975. Afterwhich he was the Birmingham City FC
assistant manager to Willie Bell from October 1975 until 20 May 1977.
First team coach at Hull City FC between December 1977 and February 1978.
Became the youth coach at Manchester United FC from May 1978 until 1981,
from when he acted as a part-time scout. |
