Baptism Sunday, 10 November 1872 at St. Nicholas' Church, Nottingham, alongside his brother Alfred.
 

According to the 1871 census, Charles, and his young brother, Alfred, are the two youngest sons of four sons to Robert and Hannah (née Boultby). His father is a greengrocer and they live at 11 Orchard Street in the Castle area of Nottingham. His older brother, Cecil, is blind in one eye following an accident.

 

According to the 1881 census, the family of six, including Charles and Alfred, and one servant, live at 4 Castle Street in the Sneinton area of Nottingham. His father is a shopkeeper and all of the sons work with him.
(His mother died in early 1887)

Children Charlie and Eliza Shelton had four children together. Archibald Charles (b.12 April 1889), Mabel Ivy (b.6 August 1890), Alfred Reginald (b.1893) and Edna Blanche (b.14 October 1903).
 

According to the 1891 census, Charles is a bookkeeper, married to Eliza with two children, Archibald and Mabel, and they live at 3 Queen's Walk in the St. Mary's area of Nottingham.
(His father died in later 1892)

 

According to the 1901 census, Charles is still a bookkeeper, still married and now with a third child, Alfred. They all live at 15 Epperstone Road in West Bridgford.
(His son, Alfred, died in 1906)

 

According to the 1911 census, Charles and Eliza are still married and still with three children. Charles is a Municipal Clerk and they all live at 2 Devonshire Road in West Bridgford.

 

According to the 1921 census, Charles, an accountant for the Corporation of Nottinghamshire Gas Dept., is still married and with two of their children, they still live at 2 Devonshire Road.
(His younger brother Alf Shelton died 24 July 1923)
(Mabel married Leonard Widdowson, of West Bridgford, on 28 July 1927. Leonard was the son of Albert Widdowson, a cousin of Sam.)

Playing Career

Club(s) Played junior football in Nottingham, including South Notts. FC, before joining the Nottingham Rangers FC. Shelton then guested for Notts County FC in 1885-86 before being appointed as the Rangers captain. Shelton severed his long standing connection with Rangers on 31 August 1888. He joined Notts County FC soon after and played with them periodically until 1893; He did return to Rangers in the mid-1889, where he was appointed as the honorary secretary for the summer. Then re-appointed in March 1890. He was also playing for Burton Wanderers FC in 1889 and 1891. Nottingham Forest FC in October 1891, as well as Loughborough FC the same year.
