Playing Career |
Club(s) |
Played his schoolboy football in Preston and his junior football with
Willow's Rovers FC, a Sunday School team from Kirkham. He was also playing
for Fleetwood FC and Morecambe FC in the Mid-Lancashire League. It was
from there that Blackpool FC signed him as an inside-forward in February
1912. Just before the outbreak of war,
he was tried, successfully, at centre half-back and handed the captaincy.
He completed 83 league appearances and fourteen goals, The
Wednesday Club paid £3000 in a transfer fee for him on 10
March 1920 and made him their captain. It was reported
on 12 March 1923, that he had been transferred to Blackburn Rovers FC, a
day later, it was reported that this was without foundation. Negotiations
had taken place, but the transfer was not signed. Wilson
went on to complete 185 league appearances and scored five goals
followed. Then on 13 July 1925, Nelson FC then paid a £2500 transfer fee that broke the record for a Third
Division club. He was also offered The Prince of Wales Hotel, on the Leeds
Road in Nelson, as part of his fee, as well as the position of club
captain. Wilson retired in July 1930 after 160
league appearances and eighteen goals. |
