    Match Report

England could make only a draw of the first International Association Match of the season, the score in the game against Ireland, at Belfast, on Saturday being one goal each.

The ground was very nearly perfect for clever football, neither too hard nor too soft, the very ground to suit one of the old-fashioned forwards of the dribbling school. England had the more chances, but the inside forwards, when nearly within shooting distance, hesitated, and when they did shoot, lacked both pace and direction...

Ireland scored the first goal after half an hour's play. Clay was forced to concede a corner, and following the kick Gillespie put the ball into the net. Five minutes later Simms made an opening for Kirton, who headed through, giving Scott no possible chance of saving... - The Times - Monday 24th October, 1921
