Light blue shirt with light-blue crew neck and thick navy blue hem at the bottom of the shirt. Cuffs and back of collar edged with navy blue. Thick white panels, running from neck, dropping to a v-shape on the reverse, narrowing slightly along the collarbone, then widening at right-angles at the front and running down each sleeve to the elbows, before narrowing again to a point on the inner sleeve, whilst also splitting into a v-shape to continue down the inner sleeves to the elbows, and down the side of the shirt from the armpit, narrowing to a point at each hip. Small light-blue cross in a white diamond, within the white panel at the back of the neck. Embroidered emblem on left breast, with 'ENGLAND' in capitalised white lettering inside a navy blue panel above the emblem, and a small gold star above the panel. Variations
  • For the two matches in the 2004 European Championship, England had logos sewn-on to the upper sleeves. The 'Euro 2004' tournament logo was on the right arm and the UEFA Fair Play logo was on the left arm.

  • Against Switzerland and the Netherlands, the match details were re-positioned to the bottom of the shirt, just above the hem, as per the outfield shirt (but not for the European Championship quarter-final match, against Portugal).

  • In the World Cup qualifying fixtures against Wales and Azerbaijan (but not in the first two qualifiers), England had a black and white FIFA WORLD CUP GERMANY 2006 logo heat-pressed onto the upper right sleeve.

  • Against the Netherlands, NO TO RACISM was displayed in large silver capitalised lettering underneath the number on the chest and the LET'S KEEP RACISM OUT OF FOOTBALL badge was sewn on to the upper right sleeve.

  • The names of England's opponents, as they appeared in the match details, were AUSTRIA, AZERBAIJAN, HOLLAND, JAPAN, POLAND, PORTUGAL, SWEDEN, SWITZERLAND and WALES. England were named second in the five away fixtures. They were named first in the other four fixtures.

Penalties Conceded

David James (six in a shootout)

  • England crashed out of the 2004 European Championship.

Penalties Missed

David James (one in a shootout)

  • Rui Costa fired Portugal's third penalty over the bar.

Although this kit was launched with a new red change kit, it immediately became the goalkeeper's first choice.

David James wore it in the dramatic penalty shootout against Portugal, the latest in a long line of defeats of that nature. It was also in this kit, in England's first qualification match of their 2006 World Cup campaign, against Austria in Vienna, that James made the error that caused Eriksson to drop him in favour of Paul Robinson, who seized the opportunity with both hands.

England had been two goals up, but two minutes after Austria had pulled one back, James allowed an Ivanschitz shot from outside the area, deflected off John Terry, to slip through his hands to salvage a point for their hosts. There was no real damage inflicted on England's chances of qualifying (they went on to win the group), but James did not play in another competitive match for England for another four years.
