Description

Black shirt with v-neck, edged with thin red line around front, overlapped by thicker red line around back of collar, ending in a point alongside the thin line at the collarbones. Red snakeskin-effect pattern across reverse and on lower sleeves, with solid red panels running down from each elbow. Small gold star on left sleeve, inside red panel. Embroidered emblem in the middle of the chest, with 'ENGLAND' in capitalised white lettering inside a navy blue panel above the emblem. Two embroidered white concentric diamonds below the emblem, with a registered trademark in white, placed underneath the gap between the left point of each diamond. White number one on reverse and in centre of chest, beneath the diamonds, in same font as outfield shirts. Surname in capitalised white lettering above number on reverse in same font as the numbers. Match details embroidered in white, positioned centrally at bottom of shirt, just above hem, in following format:

ENGLAND

v

SERBIA & MONTENEGRO

03062003

Black shorts with thick red seams, narrowing to a point two-thirds midway down. Red waistband on reverse. White number on left thigh, in the same font as on the shirt. Embroidered emblem on right thigh with 'ENGLAND' in capitalised white lettering inside a navy blue panel above the emblem. Two embroidered white concentric diamonds below the emblem, with a registered trademark in white, placed underneath the gap between the left point of each diamond. Black socks, with two large white concentric diamonds on calf.

Variations
  • Paul Robinson wore number 13 against South Africa and Croatia.
  • Ian Walker wore number 22 against Iceland.
  • Against Iceland, the match details were re-positioned to the centre of the chest, below the number, as per the outfield shirt.
  • Against France, England had logos sewn-on to the upper sleeves. The 'Euro 2004' tournament logo was on the right arm and the UEFA Fair Play logo was on the left arm.
  • The names of England's opponents, as they appeared in the match details, were CROATIA, FRANCE, ICELAND, LIECHTENSTEIN*, SERBIA & MONTENEGRO, SLOVAKIA and SOUTH AFRICA. England were named first in the five home fixtures. They were named second in the other three fixtures.

*In the home game against Liechtenstein, the opponent's name was misspelt as LEICHTENSTEIN (thanks to Simon Shakeshaft and England Match Shirts for spotting that one!).

Appearances

6 - David James

1.667 - Paul Robinson

0.333 - Ian Walker

  • Walker's half an hour against Iceland won him his fourth cap, but it was his last appearance in an England shirt.

Penalties Conceded

1 - David James

  • Zinedine Zidane scored a heartbreaking winner for France, three minutes into added time, in their opening fixture of Euro 2004, after England had led after ninety minutes.

David James took on the mantle of England's number one, following David Seaman's retirement from international football, and got off to a good start.

This kit included an extravagant design on the back that was almost a throwback to the excesses of ten years earlier, and it was the continuation of the design on the sleeves that prevented James from wearing the shirt in a second Euro 2004 fixture, against Croatia, due to a clash with their opponents' red and white chequered sleeves. So, a last-minute change brought in a black training shirt (with no red whatsoever, even in the emblem!) to be worn with the shorts and socks from this outfit.
