The two unbeaten teams at the top were setting the early pace, but
Wolves, the FA Cup holders, were about to embark on an almighty slump.
Astonishingly, it would be after Christmas when they won their next
league game, yet they finished strongly as runners-up. Liverpool,
meanwhile, did not lose until December, and finished eighth, though
they also reached the FA Cup Final.

Tottenham had embarked on a 22-match unbeaten run. Arthur Rowe's
simple but effective 'push and run' tactics proved unstoppable and
Spurs not only won the second-division title, but also stormed to the
Football League Championship, a year later.
