An incredibly close title race, with only two points separating the
top six clubs. Wolves scored 13 goals in their last three games, but
it wasn't quite enough, and Portsmouth held on to their title on goal
average by 0.396 of a goal.

Tottenham had already clinched the second-division title, a week
earlier, so attention shifted to the titanic battle for the second
promotion place between the three clubs directly below them. Sheffield
United won their last three games and although Southampton drew level
on points with them, it was Sheffield Wednesday who contested a
goalless draw with the champions (who failed to win any of their last
five games) to take the runners-up spot on goal average from their two
rivals. United lost out to their near neighbours by 0.008 (or 1/125th)
of a goal. In reality, if Wednesday had drawn 1-1 with Spurs, there
would have been a promotion play-off between the two Sheffield clubs.
Twelve months later, Wednesday were relegated from the first division
on goal average.

Though they had stumbled in recent weeks, with only one win in their
last five games, Notts County defeated Forest in the local derby,
seven days later, to secure their promotion.

Doncaster player-manager, Peter Doherty's goal at Barrow was enough to
take them into the second division for the second time since the war,
and this time they were able to last more than a season.
