Arsenal's fifth successive victory put them within sight of a record
seventh title, and all in 26 seasons, since they became the first
southern club to win it, in 1931. Preston beat them, a week later, but the
Gunners held on to the top by 0.099 of a goal to lift the trophy,
seven days later.

The gap to second-placed Port Vale was only a point at the end, but
Oldham were never really in danger of losing the top spot.
Surprisingly, they finished bottom of the second division, a year
later, and Port Vale replaced them. Oldham took another twenty years
before they returned.
