With their eyes on a historic league and cup double, FA Cup finalists,
West Brom were suffering with injuries to key players. Whilst Allen
and Nicholls were scoring for England at Hampden, they were losing a
crucial match to their biggest rivals, both locally and nationally.
They did end up with the FA Cup, but it was Wolves who strode to their
first title.

An extremely close finish to the promotion race ended with only one
point between the top three. Though Blackburn beat Leicester 3-0 on
Good Friday, they went down by four goals at Leicester, three days
later. Blackburn still had the better goal average of the three, but
the game in hand for both Leicester and Everton proved just enough to
leave Rovers in third place.

Seven days earlier, Port Vale had become the first club from the third
division (north) to compete in an FA Cup semi-final, and with less
than half an hour to play, were a goal up against the league leaders,
West Bromwich Albion before losing to a disputed penalty. Vale
finished the season unbeaten in their last 18 league games and won the
title by eleven points.
