Match Report
by Bill Holden, Daily Mirror, Friday, 8
May 1959 |
FOR the first time in years an
English Soccer team was cheered long, loud and gloriously by foreign fans
after those heart-swelling victory here today. At the end armed police had
to rescue the Italian team from their own crowd as fans hooted and shouted
'dustbins' at them. But for Young England it was applause all the way.
They did not just beat Italy, they showed them how the game should be
played.
The Italian supporters were cascading their
cushions on the pitch in disgust long before the end.
With no
pre-match training these Under-23 kids battled against the heat;
the reaction of Italy's draw against the full England side at Wembley
yesterday, and an excitable dramatic crowd. But the young pride of English
Lions went in and hammered home our true Soccer superiority. Three times
England should have gone ahead before they did score in the twenty-fifth
minute. Peter Brabrook's right wing cross was never properly cleared and
centre-half Tagliani sent the ball straight to inside left Ray Parry who
slammed it into the gaping goal. Four minutes later Brabrook, outside left
Albert Scanlon and inside right Jimmy Greaves, combined in a masterpiece
of defensive destruction. Parry slammed the ball
against against a post and centre forward Ray Pointer hit the rebound into
the net. Parry and Greaves almost put it beyond doubt before
half-time. But in the last minute before the break centre half Trevor
Smith, the biggest player and greatest star, collapsed on the pitch in
agony with an ankle injury. He recovered, not just to come back, but to
race through himself in the fifty-sixth minute and lay on the pass for
Pointer to hit the third goal. Later when Smith was carried off again in
the second half he insisted on coming back, even though victory was
certain. Afterwards Arsenal and England coach Ron Greenwood said: 'We
thought we would meet a far stronger Italian team.' And the Italians?
Coach Giovanni Ferrari said: 'It was a real disaster.'

Match Report
as appears in the F.A. Yearbook 1959-60 page 35 |
The following day England's Under-23
team gave a fine display in Milan to beat Italy comfortably. They were on
top from the start, and midway through the first half Parry gave them the
lead, seizing on a rebound from an effort by Scanlon. Soon after this
Pointer made it 2-0 when he scored after Parry hit the post. The third
goal came soon after the interval, when Smith dribbled through and Pointer
scored from his pass. There were no weak links in this England team,
Allen, Smith, and Parry deserving special praise.
