Long
before his current status as journalist and broadcaster, 'Gentleman Jim'
achieved fame as Blackpool and England's full-back, signing professional
in 1954. He was voted the 'best right-back in the world' after the
1962 Chile World Cup finals. This book pre-dates his management
career with Bolton Wanderers and Leeds United.

Club(s): Was captain of his school
team, at Rugby and Cricket, but it was while playing football he was
spotted by his local league side. He assisted
two Blackpool Youth Clubs, St Peter's and Highfield before signing amateur
forms with Blackpool FC in 1951, turning professional in September 1954,
and remained with them, despite an attempt by Manchester United FC to buy
him in 1957. He left when he was appointed as Bolton Wanderers FC player-manager on 19 May
1971. |

player-coach of Blackpool FC on 13 February 1971, but turned down the
opportunity to become the reserve team coach to become player-manager of Bolton
Wanderers FC on 19 May 1971. Turned down an approach by Everton FC to
become their new manager in May 1973. Took over Leeds United AFC, following the
dismissal of Brian Clough, on 4 October 1974 until he too was sacked on 3 July
1978. |

Since leaving club managership has been a
regular football broadcaster on BBC Radio, more recently Radio 5 live,
also working with the Daily Express newspaper from 1979 to 1991.
Jimmy Armfield was appointed
Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire and served as High Sheriff of Lancashire
in 2005-06. He finally received his World Cup winners medal on 10
June 2009 at 10 Downing Street, London. -
