Diary

Friday, 9 December 1960 - The Football Association have named sixteen players for the first of the 'get-togethers' of England players this season, and it is hoped to play a practice game against Aston Villa next Wednesday at Lilleshall but, depending on ground conditions, the game maybe switched to Villa Park.
The party to assemble at the National Recreation Centre, Lilleshall in Shropshire, next Monday are the twelve players and regular reserve, Brian Miller, that have started for England this season, plus Ray Wilson, John Connelly and Peter Broadbent. They will spend two and half days in combined training and discussions.

Saturday, 10 December 1960 - England's centre-forward Bobby Smith misses Tottenham Hotspur's match at Preston North End because of a throat infection.  He remains a doubt for the Lilleshall get-together.

Monday, 12 December 1960 - Bobby Smith could not join the party because of septic tonsils so his place has been handed to Burnley's Ray Pointer.
The England party make full use of the indoor facilities, as the weather makes the outdoor areas unplayable. The players started with training exercises and ball movements and later held tactical discussions and saw films. It means the party will travel to Villa Park on Wednesday for their practice match.

Tuesday, 13 December 1960 - Thick and fog again affected England's training schedule for a second day. The players went out for a private practice match in the morning, but had to return indoors for more gym work.
Ray Pointer, and his teammate, John Connelly, will miss Burnley's League Cup fourth round match against Nottingham Forest tonight. Brian Miller would have been allowed to leave Lilleshall to participate but the match is postponed.
Ron Flowers has left Lilleshall after a reoccurrence of an old ankle injury. He returns to his club. In an urgent phone call to Old Trafford, Walter Winterbootom has called on Maurice Setters as Flowers's replacement.
While the best of England player's are gathered at Lilleshall, over at the York Room in Caxton Hall in Westminster, at five o'clock, 250 footballers, headed by Jimmy Hill, raised their hands in defiance of the Football League. The players, from 28 Southern clubs, will strike on 14 January 1961. The players took the decision after throwing out the League's offer of improved pay and conditions. Northern players will decide tomorrow in Manchester, and those based in the Midlands, will meet in Birmingham on Thursday.

Wednesday, 14 December 1960 - In the morning, England draw 1-1 in a 55-minute 'tactical exercise' match with Aston Villa at Villa Park. Villa's manager, Joe Mercer, was probably the happier of the two managers, as he got a look at Jimmy Greaves, and barking instructions to his defenders in dealing with him. Greaves scored England's goal, whilst Gerry Hitchens got the reply. Villa face Chelsea this weekend.
England: Alan Hodgkinson, Jimmy Armfield, Mick McNeil (Ray Wilson), Bobby Robson, Peter Swan, Maurice Setters, Bryan Douglas (John Connelly), Jimmy Greaves (Peter Broadbent), Ray Pointer, Johnny Haynes, Bobby Charlton.
Aston Villa: Nigel Sims, John Neal (Stan Lynn), Doug Winton, Vic Crowe, Jimmy Dugdale, Alan Deakin, Jimmy MacEwan, Bobby Thomson, Gerry Hitchens, Harry Burrows, Peter McParland (Jimmy Adam).

Walter Winterbottom confirmed afterwards that the three day session served a useful purpose and that the next meeting will be in Southport from 23 February.
In the meantime, the Northern based-footballers have voted in favour of strike. 254 for, six against.
In the evening, Bryan Douglas played for Blackburn Rovers in their 3-1 Extra-Time loss at Wrexham, of their League Cup fourth round replay match, and Greaves featured in Portsmouth for Chelsea in their fourth round 1-0 defeat.

Thursday, 15 December 1960 - The players based in the Midlands voted strongly in favour of a strike. 186 for, 12 against. Ronnie Allen had submitted a 'Peace Plan', but this was rejected.
