Club. Was signed for Worksop Town before signing amateur forms with
Sheffield United FC in January 1953, signing professionally in the August.
He moved into coaching in January 1971, with his club still retaining his
registration into the following season. |

Beyond England |
Became the manager of Sheffield United
FC's reserve team in January 1971, and then appointed as Gillingham FC's
assistant manager on 19 November 1975, effective 1 December. He was at
Birmingham City FC as a part-time coach in late-1981 and a goalkeeper
coach at Coventry City FC at the same time. On 25 August 1986, Hodgkinson
was appointed as a goalkeeper coach, under Andy Roxburgh, for Scotland's
national side. In 1987, Living near Rugby
'he travels nearly 5,000 miles a month coaching the goalkeepers of clubs
all over Britain, and is also coach to Scotland's international keepers.' After
Scotland, Alan returned to the Midlands and used his experience at Rushden
& Diamonds FC, and then Oxford United FC before retiring on 30 August
2012. -
