Club Career

Club(s) Began his career with local side Redcar Boys Club, also appearing for Redcar United FC and Tudor Rose, as a full-back. Joined the Chelsea FC groundstaff in May 1949 as a sixteen year-old.  He turned professional when he was seventeen in May 1950. He was transferred to Tottenham Hotspur FC on 21 December 1955 for £17,000.  He was transferred to Brighton & Hove Albion FC for £5,000 in May 1964 following a series of articles published by Smith regarding his club.  He was suspended by Brighton in 1965 for being 15st., declaring him unfit.  He found himself playing with non-league side Hastings United FC in October 1965 before being suspended in March 1967.  A trial with Leyton Orient FC in 1967 materialised into nothing, as did a trial the following summer with Banbury United FC.  His playing career came to a premature end with an amazing tally of 218 league goals in 376 league appearances.

Beyond England

Smith had various jobs as a taxi and van driver, a painter and decorator, but was injured when falling down a manhole.
In 1999, his 1961 FA Cup winners' medal, which had vanished from his house, suddenly turned up in an auction, where it was sold for £11,200. "I think it's disgusting," said Smith, "It's only football. How can prices like this be justified?"
