to and including England's last match, the ninth of the 2020-21 season, against
San Marino on 25 March 2021
Diary
Tuesday, 16 March 2021 - Everton
goalkeeper Jordan Pickford will miss England's three World Cup
qualifiers this month after sustaining an abdominal muscle injury.
Pickford was forced off just before half-time in Saturday's Premier
League defeat to Burnley. He injured his oblique abdominal muscle
attempting to stop a strike from Johann Berg Gudmundsson. He will also
miss Everton's FA Cup quarter-final against Manchester City this
weekend.
Wednesday, 17 March 2021 - A call-up for Jude Bellingham is in
doubt because of coronavirus restrictions. A change in the Covid19
rules late last night in North Rhine Westphalia where Dortmund are
based has put his call-up in doubt. Dortmund will not allow players to
travel with their country if it means they cannot and train for their
club upon their return. Bellingham would have to self-isolate
for fourteen days. His teammate Jadon Sancho is currently injured.
Thursday, 18 March 2021, 2.00pm -
Gareth Southgate has announced his first squad of 2021, given debut
call-ups to Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins and West Bromwich Albion
goalkeeper, Sam Johnstone. There are also returns for Luke Shaw, Jesse
Lingard and John Stones. Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold misses out
on the 26-man squad. Jude Bellingham may still miss out because of the
coronavirus restrictions in Germany.
Saturday, 20 March 2021 -
Dortmund's Jude Bellingham was subjected to racist abuse online after
his team's draw at Cologne today in which he gave away a first half
penalty. Bellingham posted about the abuse saying 'Just another day on
social media'. The FA responded with their support.
Sunday, 21 March
2021 - An update to the CoVid restrictions in Germany has
allowed Jude Bellingham to join up with the England squad.
Monday, 22
March 2021 - 25 of the 26-man squad arrive at St. George's Park.
Bukayo Saka has remained with his club for further assessment on his
hamstring injury and he
should join the squad before the end of the week.
Tuesday, 23 March
2021 - It is a Day of Reflection as it is announced that former
England striker Frank Worthington had tragically died overnight, aged
72. Before training starts at St. George's Park, there is a minute's
silence for all those who lost their lives over the past year whilst
the country was under lockdown. In the afternoon, Ollie Watkins gives
his first press conference as a England squad member.
Wednesday, 24
March 2021 - The squad leave St. George's Park following
another day of training. Marcus Rashford sits out to continue his
rehabilitation on his foot injury. They are now set up in their London base.
Marcus Rashford remains a doubt for England's match
tomorrow night with San Marino. He has not trained this week as he
attempts to recover from his foot injury. It is certain that Bukayo
Saka will miss the match because of a hamstring injury. Southgate has
asked his side to be 'ruthless' tomorrow night. "We should enjoy
playing with the ball, but need to be ruthless with it. To have the
creativity to score goals we have got to be positive and say it is a
game which we can enjoy."
Thursday,
25 March 2021, 11.33am -
England's qualifier against Albania in Tirana on Sunday is at
risk of being called off because of an issue over security.
The FSHF said it has been informed by local police that the
force cannot guarantee the safety of the teams. The FA responded with
"We will continue to liaise with the relevant authorities."
The AFA's dilemma follows its request for a restricted number
of fans vaccinated against Covid-19 be permitted to attend the game,
which was rejected by government.
The Group I match will therefore be played behind closed
doors, and with no other lockdown measures in place in in the country
it could mean the area around the the Air Albania Stadium could be
busy, seemingly with no promise of adequate policing.
"Today a letter arrived which states that the structures of
the local police directorate of Tirana do not guarantee the taking of
measures before, during and after the Albania-England match on 28
March.
Faced with the situation where the state authorities did not
react after the request of the Albanian Football Federation for the
release of spaces on the perimeter of the national stadium, we request
urgent response of these structures.
The cancellation of the Albania-England match scheduled to be
played at Air Albania Stadium would have catastrophic consequences for
the image of our country, the national team and in general for
Albanian football." 9.37pm -
England 5 San Marino 0
- England's 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign started with a
predictably routine victory. The side at the bottom of the FIFA
rankings were never going to be anything but an easy target, even with
Harry Kane on the bench, it proved to be a one-sided affair behind
closed doors. England should have inflicted a much heavier loss on
their opponents, but for poor finishing. The highlight being a goal
for Ollie Watkins who came on as a substitute to make his debut. James
Ward-Prowse's first goal for England, was followed by a Dominic
Calvert-Lewin header. Raheem Sterling, captain for the night and
desperate to score from the start, added a third before half-time.
Calvert-Lewin scored his second eight minutes after the break, before
his replacement, Ollie Watkins, got in on the act seven minutes after
coming on.
Friday, 26 March 2021 - Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka have
been ruled out of England's upcoming qualification matches against
Albania and Poland. Rashford joined up with the squad despite the foot
injury, but Saka remained with his club, because of a hamstring
injury.
Saturday, 27 March 2021 -
The 24 remaining players train in the morning before the squad
leave for Albania in the afternoon, as the death of ex-international
Derek Ufton is announced, the oldest surviving England player.
Gareth Southgate confirms that Nick Pope will start both the next two
games in goal. He could become the first England goalkeeper to keep
six clean sheets in his first six appearances.
